Hey Tony, firstly, props to knowing...Shane Donovan

Hey Tony, firstly, props to knowing the categories of manga lol. I agree that gamer should not be given political meaning, but I disagree that the consumerism aspect of the gaming culture is all it is, I myself have made alot of friends through gaming and many times when we've socialised it's been doing something other than gaming. The gamer crowd I know is also very accepting of all kinds of folks, disability and mental conditions doesn't matter - even people that aren't the hardcore gamers are welcome. I work at lifeline and I talk to unhappy people constantly, and you know what I notice - the gaming community, specifically the people I hang out with just don't have the same kinds of issues these unhappy people always seem to have. Gamers aren't pre occupied in family drama, aren't pre occupied in work drama, their passion gives them a reason to look past that and over to something enjoyable. I definitely agree that gaming can be unhealthy, exercise and sun are very necessary :P but I guess I'm saying a gaming culture provides plenty of social needs.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4894764035439419656.post-80505098792689393292014-12-02T05:01:30.332-08:002014-12-02T05:01:30.332-08:00An interesting read Tone.

The only thing I think you've not addressed here is the amplification effects that goes with multiplayer games, and the socialising that occurs in and around them, online. The malaise / alienation of consumption, is to some extent blunted by the bonds that people form with other nominally like-minded people, who they may never physically meet.

This, and the ability to be anonymous, to cultivate and project an online persona that may bear no relationship to your real-world one, (and to be associating with others potentially doing the same) mean that people may take the trash-talk and victim-mentality of Gamergate to place it might not otherwise go.HughChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05461304298747542809noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4894764035439419656.post-346511528424971612014-12-01T16:45:01.004-08:002014-12-01T16:45:01.004-08:00He is an example, a marathon runner. They train for months, get up at the crack of dawn to run, eat wierd carb loading diets all to achieve what some may think or as a completely silly and trite goal. Coming first or beating the personal best time.
Just think how that runner will feel if thier best time is spoiled by a first time, amature runner getting in the way.
I think this is why gamer tends to get a bad rep, most people will see games as pure fun "hey man relax its just a game" but to the gamer its not, its serious for them. And yes like the runner they do get narkie at causual players.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10886205301949792737noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4894764035439419656.post-91929088312363551722014-12-01T16:35:18.040-08:002014-12-01T16:35:18.040-08:00Well, let me pitch my two cents.
"Gamer"...Well, let me pitch my two cents.
"Gamer" is aplied to a specific type of player, not just video game players in general. For our warhammer games the equivalent would be beardy or tournament players.
And i think that gamer label/attitude is variable. When i was playing world of warcraft i was definatly a gamer. I would spend hours each day preping and training for sat night raids or pvp.
Actually i think this may be the heart of the matter, media seems to have lumped anyone playing video games into "gamer".
I think gamer is sub group of players, driven and determined to achieve thier goal. Grinding mobs for rep or farming for resorces is not fun, it usuallh boring and repeditive but gamers are going in for the delayed satisfaction at the end.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10886205301949792737noreply@blogger.com
